About Our Temple
The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, approximately 110 years old, was established in the Haji Montok neighborhood, surrounded by areas where many Tamils lived. The Tamils in this neighborhood decided to build a temple. Through the efforts of Mr. Suppiah, a small temple was constructed with modest resources. Initially functioning as a makeshift temple under a tree, it later evolved into a proper temple with a small wooden structure. In 1970, the old temple was completely renovated, and a Khumbabishegam ceremony took place. The construction of the new temple was carried out by the Department of Public Works (JKR) under the supervision of Mr. Kathirgamu, who executed the project with great dedication. The temple management, along with the devotees, played a significant role in making the new temple a grand success. In 2019, the fifth Khumbabashegam ceremony took place. Currently, the temple is formally registered, and all the rituals and festivals are celebrated with great reverence. It stands as a significant cultural center for the residents of the surrounding areas.
