About Our Temple
In the 1930s, Tamils were employed on the Palas River tea plantations, where the British estate owners constructed a temple and a Tamil school for the community. The Tamils residing on the estate devoted their worship to Lord Muneeswaran and Goddess Mariamman. Initially, their religious practices involved using trident (Sulaam). Subsequently, a small Mariamman temple was constructed, facilitated by the support of the estate administration. As time passed and the estate changed ownership, the Tamil population on the estate relocated to urban areas. Currently, only the Tamil temple and school continue to operate with the estate's permission, even though the Tamils no longer reside there. Despite the absence of estate residents, Tamil individuals from the estate actively participate in and oversee the main pujas and festivals conducted at the temple. However, the Tamil school is experiencing a decline in student enrollment, raising concerns about the future of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple and the Tamil school within the estate.
